Long before its current role as an travel destination for visitors from
around the world, Mazatlan enjoyed a previous life as a busy, bustling
sea port. It still retains some of this previous history on the sea, and
as a result Mazatlan is not as touristy as some of the other resorts on
the Pacific Coast of Mexico.
Another great thing that sets Mazatlan apart from Mexico's other
resort locations are the benefits afforded by the big city location. This
fortuitous location means that prices in Mazatlan are lower than they

shopping to dining is more affordable than in other resort cities.

The city of Mazatlan is divided into two separate regions. The city
region, or "Old Mazatlan", is where the industrious activity of the city
takes place. The resort region to the north, or "Zona Durada", is a
long ribbon of sandy beaches, fine restaurants, shopping centers and
resort hotels.
In addition to the tourist industry, Mazatlan is Mexico's most important
fishing port. Its two most important catches are tuna and shrimp. Of
course it was this abundance of sea life that attracted tourists to
Mazatlan in the first place. The port is also home to the largest sport
fishing fleet in Mexico, with an annual catch of over 10,000 sailfish and
marlin in the surrounding waters.
